I Have Gum Problems

Book Your Appointment

If your gums are bleeding, swollen, or feel sore, you’re not alone. Gum issues are one of the most common reasons people experience dental discomfort—and they can be an early sign of something more serious. At Kentlands Dental, we understand how important healthy gums are to your overall health, not just your smile.

What Are Gum Problems?

Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It typically begins with plaque buildup that hardens into tartar, which irritates and inflames the gums. Left untreated, it can lead to bone loss, tooth loss, and even affect your overall health.

Common symptoms include:

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Red or swollen gums
  • Receding gum line
  • Loose teeth

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to schedule a visit. The earlier we catch it, the easier it is to treat.

Our Approach to Gum Health

We believe in proactive care. When you come to Kentlands Dental with concerns about your gums, our first step is a comprehensive evaluation. We’ll measure your gum pockets, assess plaque and tartar buildup, and determine if bone loss has started.

Depending on the severity, we may recommend:

1. Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

This is the first line of defense against early and moderate gum disease. We remove tartar from below the gum line and smooth the roots so your gums can reattach to the tooth surface.

2. Antibacterial Rinses or Antibiotics

In some cases, we may prescribe medicated mouthwash or place antibiotics directly into the gum pockets to help reduce infection.

3. Periodontal Maintenance

If you’ve had gum disease before, you’ll need more frequent cleanings to keep bacteria from coming back. We typically recommend visits every 3 to 4 months instead of the usual twice a year.

4. Laser Therapy (when appropriate)

Advanced gum infections may benefit from laser treatments to disinfect deep pockets and promote faster healing.

Why Gum Health Matters

Gum disease doesn’t just stay in your mouth. Research shows strong links between gum inflammation and systemic health conditions like:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Respiratory infections
  • Complications during pregnancy

Taking care of your gums is an investment in your long-term health. It’s not just about keeping your teeth—it’s about protecting your body.

Can Gum Disease Be Reversed?

Yes, in its earliest stage (gingivitis), gum disease is reversible. With regular cleanings and improved at-home care, your gums can return to a healthy state. However, more advanced stages require professional treatment to prevent further damage.

What You Can Do at Home

We partner with you in protecting your gums. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled brush
  • Floss every day (yes, it really matters!)
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash
  • Avoid smoking, which worsens gum disease
  • Keep up with your dental visits
